Sediment from the eruption of Mount St. Helens continues to have an impact around the mountain

1 min read

Today, Mount St Helens shows signs of normal background activity.
No eruption is expected in the near future; however, there are still active, ongoing geologic challenges resulting from the 1980 eruption.
The eruption blew a cubic mile of earth off the mountain.
That sediment continues to impact the surrounding environment, and efforts are in place to protect communities downstream from problems it could cause.
KATU’s Jessi Satin takes a look at two structures built during the emergency response after the eruption, how they protect communities downstream, their impact on the natural recovery of the area, and some of the people working toward future solutions as that infrastructure ages.
