Trump during Cabinet meeting: ‘We could run D.C.’ | NBC4 Washington

In response to a question about how Republicans in New York should vote in the upcoming mayoral election, President Donald Trump slammed Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, and flexed the idea of White House power to "take over" cities. Trump listed D.C. as an example of cities the White House could take control of.

"We could run D.C.," Trump said. "We don’t want crime in D.C. We want the city to run well."

Trump has previously threatened a federal takeover of the District and made the largely Democratic city a target during his reelection campaign.

Any president of the United States has enormous power when it comes to D.C. because it’s not a state. The president can take over the police department and many of the powers the mayor and D.C. Council have.

"You know, we’re thinking about doing it, to be honest with you," Trump said, before seeming to back off. "But we’ve had a good relationship with the mayor and we’re testing it to see if it works."
