Oregon Health Authority issues warnings on toxic cyanobacteria blooms in waterways
2 min read
As summer approaches, the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is urging residents and visitors to be vigilant about potentially toxic cyanobacteria blooms in the state’s lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. The OHA has introduced a new tool to report the possible presence of cyanobacteria in freshwater bodies across Oregon. Effective immediately, the agency will issue pre-emptive public warnings following reports of dog illnesses or deaths potentially linked to cyanotoxin exposure.
"Each year, we receive reports about dog illnesses or deaths linked to a water body that may be affected by cyanobacteria, but the deaths are often unexplained, or the cause of the death isn’t immediately known," said Linda Novitski, Ph.D., a recreational waters specialist in OHA’s Environmental Public Health Section.
"These pre-emptive warnings will help us immediately take steps to inform the public about the possible presence of cyanobacteria in a water body," she added.
Cyanobacteria, beneficial bacteria found in all freshwater worldwide, can multiply into blooms under certain conditions such as warm weather, sunlight, and specific water chemistry. While many blooms are harmless, some produce cyanotoxins that can sicken humans and animals. Exposure occurs when water or algae mat material is swallowed or when water droplets are inhaled during activities like water-skiing.
