Portland’s been through a lot in the last five years including large scale protests, an increase in gun violence and an explosion of fentanyl. So, there’s a lot to ask Chief Day about.
While he’s been in the chief’s office for a year and a half, he has a long history with bureau. He retired as Deputy Chief in 2019 but returned as Chief of Police in 2023.
In this exclusive interview, he discuses how Portland is changing, what police are doing to address gun violence, what’s the strategy to get drug dealers off the streets, and how the bureau is addressing the biggest public safety challenge in the city.
