Students, organizer speak ahead of conservative figure’s appearance at Portland State University

Various student organizations at Portland State University are hosting protests and inclusive sporting events as a counter to a speaking engagement featuring conservative activist, Riley Gaines.
The former nationally-ranked collegiate women’s swimming athlete turned spokesperson against transgender athletes’ inclusion in women’s sports, is scheduled to speak at the Student Union building Monday evening.
Gaines tied for fifth place while swimming for the University of Kentucky in the 200 freestyle final at the 2022 NCAA Women’s Championships. She tied with transgender University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas, and began her anti-transgender advocacy journey shortly after Thomas was handed the trophy for fifth place.
She appeared in a video for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Women’s Health to tout anti-transgender policies enacted by President Donald Trump.
The event is sponsored by the Leadership Institute, a non-profit geared towards supporting conservative student groups.
KATU spoke with two students and the regional manager with the Leadership Institute ahead of Monday’s speaking engagement.
