Sen. Broadman eulogizes 900 Wall, urges people to go to local restaurants

In a speech on the Oregon Senate floor, Sen. Anthony Broadman, D-Bend, paid respects to 900 Wall, the downtown Bend restaurant that closed down Monday. He also is urging people to dine at local restaurants.
Thank you, Mr. President.
Colleagues, I rise today to express my sadness and gratitude with the closing of a Bend institution over the weekend. A little gourmet restaurant called 900 Wall, owned by a dear friend. It was a clean, well-lighted place where you could still get a $10 burger after a city council meeting or a perfectly cooked gourmet filet on your anniversary.
It was a place over the last 20 years where it felt like you knew everyone in the restaurant. And the week before Christmas, if you walked in there in an evening and people having happy hours and holiday parties, you probably did. It was a place for special occasions. Prom, New Year’s retirements. Wakes. My girls used to eat free on Sunday nights there since the time they were babies.
This economy is hitting the best of us and it’s hitting us hard. So I ask you, if you can, support your local chef, your local bartender, the professionals who make eating out so special. And to paraphrase somebody I admire. Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint in a mostly empty, locally owned bar. Order the T-Bone steak rare. Eat an oyster. Eat slowly. Generously tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself and support your locals so that they can survive.
