Now is the time to apply for free air conditioners for low income residents in Portland

Officials say now is the time for elderly and low-income residents to start applying for Portland’s free air conditioner program, Cooling Portland.

The weather is pretty mild right now, but authorities are warning that dangerous heat could be just weeks away, and now is the time to prepare.

Over the past few years, Portland has seen a growing number of heat-related deaths and has tried to prevent some of those through the program that gives free air conditioning units to residents who make 60% or less of the area median income, or around $53,000 a year for one person.
