Umatilla County faces road and bridge crisis, funding discussions continue

Road maintenance and improvements are at the forefront of discussions in the current legislative session, with rural Oregon counties like Umatilla facing significant challenges due to deteriorating infrastructure.

Umatilla County Commissioner Dan Dorran highlighted the dire state of the county’s bridges, noting that 16 out of 280 are in poor condition. He said companies have been forced to take lengthy detours, sometimes over 65 miles, when a bridge over the Umatilla River was out of commission.

"It’s very much a commerce and agricultural-driven need, and the inconvenience. There isn’t enough money, if we took the whole funding package, to make it perfect. But what we want to do is make it safe, travelable, and make sure that commerce isn’t restricted," said Dorran.
