City of Portland gives $1 million to James Beard Public Market project in downtown

In a city known for its culinary scene, Portland is missing a kitchen next to its living room, and that will change when the James Beard Public Market opens next year.

"Imagine putting Pike Place Market in the heart of downtown Portland, steps from Pioneer Square," said Jessica Elkan, Executive Director of the James Beard Public Market.

As part of a marathon city council budget debate, Portland city leaders voted to commit $1 million towards the James Beard Public Market.

"That million dollars will go toward our capital campaign and to pay for the construction and tenant improvements," said Elkan.

The first phase of the project was scheduled to open later this year, but the date has been pushed back to the Summer of 2026, according to Elkan.
