What started out at John’s Place in 1965, eventually becoming known as Bernice’s after John’s death in 1998.
Vestiges of the family’s Lithuanian heritage live on, in beer offerings and mementos displayed amongst the eclectic décor and tchotchkes.
Under Steve’s stewardship, the bar has a steady stream of regulars and while remaining welcoming to new patrons.
“If you walk in and you’re a stranger, guaranteed you’ll leave with a couple of friends,” promises Steve.
Along with a push to create a haven for music and art in the neighborhood, the often-noted essential dive bar in media lists, is known for Stingo on Wednesday nights— a take on Bingo with a Steve-twist, where contestants vie mostly for bragging rights. The house rules require the yelling of “Stingo” versus “Bingo” or you’re disqualified.
