Caught on video: Police arrest Bend man after alleged mass shooting threat

2 min read

BEND, Ore. — A Bend man was arrested Friday after telling a family member he planned to conduct a mass shooting, Bend Police said Monday. The man was taken to the hospital where he is under evaluation.

Bend Police Communications Manager Sheila Miller said the department got a call Friday afternoon saying the man made the statement after an argument with family members. The suspect, identified as Nathaniel Benjamin Wright, 36, was also known to own multiple firearms.

Officers responded to Wright’s home in the 3000 block of NE Waller Drive and spotted his truck in the driveway. As they observed from a distance, officers saw Wright leave the home carrying an AR-15-style rifle and a duffle bag while wearing a ballistic vest, Miller said. He took the vest off, put it in the truck and tried to leave.

Officers stopped the truck before Wright could leave and ordered the man out at gunpoint. Miller said Wright complied without incident. He was taken into custody and transported to St. Charles. Miller said Monday he was still under evaluation.

Wright was taken into custody on suspicion of Disorderly Conduct II and Unlawful Use or Carry of a Weapon. He has not been formally charged. Deschutes County District Attorney Steve Gunnels said Monday there could be additional charges once his office receives a referral from Bend Police.

Miller said officers searched Wright’s truck and home. They applied for and were granted an Extreme Risk Protection Order, which is a court order preventing a person at risk of hurting themselves or another person from having or getting access to deadly weapons like firearms.
