Driver causes serious damage to Oregon school’s football field

2 min read

Students at an Oregon school have been sidelined, but it’s for an unusual reason.

School officials say a truck drove through Alsea School’s football field and caused serious damage.

“I’m really sad that [had] happened,” Krista Neiraeth, Alsea School District superintendent, said while underscoring the damage that has shattered the small city of Alsea. “I think we’re all just super disappointed because this is a school. This is where our kids, you know, go to school and where our kids have their experiences."

She said it happened just before 4 a.m. Thursday when a truck drove onto their football and side fields.

Pictures show the driver not only drove through but also did "doughnuts."

The damage is so bad Nieraeth thinks the field is pretty much unusable.

“Those ruts, in some places, are six to eight inches deep, which means that we are going to have to re-level our football field. So, we’re gonna have to fill, we’re gonna have to regrade it, we’re gonna have to replant, and that’s gonna take time and money,” Nieraeth said.

The driver of the truck is believed to be responsible for all that damage, damage that, believe or not, could have caused more harm.

“Unfortunately, we are not in the playoffs. But if we were in the playoffs and we did host a playoff game, we would actually have to move our playoff game to a whole different town, which would cost us time and money," Nieraeth said.

School leaders expect the field to be repaired before the start of next year’s football season.

If you have any information about this incident, you are asked to call Deputy Jesse Blaser from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 766 – 6858 or Jesse.Blaser@bentoncountyor.gov.

Although it could be months before the field is repaired, the incident reveals a resilient community.

“I think that this situation really shows that our community bands together, and they really do care about our kids and their students and our experiences,” Nieraeth said.
