Parents, staff in small Oregon school district demand accountability for budget mistake
2 min read
Parents, staff members, and students in the Corbett School District are demanding accountability after a $3 million budget shortfall is causing the district to make sweeping budget cuts, including laying off 10 staff members.
“Financial oversight is the most important duty of our superintendent and our elected school board. There should be accountability and consequences,” said parent Caroline Oakley at Wednesday’s school board meeting.
“Unfortunately, when you’re presented numbers from someone who you have in a position because they are a professional in that position, you believe those numbers,” said Superintendent Derek Fialkiewicz.
Fialkiewicz said the error by a longtime accountant from the Multnomah Education Service District was caught when Corbett School District hired an in-house chief financial officer to review the budget.
