Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discusses the latest on President Trump’s tariff efforts

Tech giant IBM on Monday announced it would invest $150 billion in American manufacturing over the next five years amid President Donald Trump’s tariff blitz.

Trump has repeatedly emphasized domestic manufacturing as the key to American trade dominance. His flurry of global trade tariffs is in part intended to incentivize manufacturers to keep business within the country.

IBM wrote its investment will include $30 billion in research and development “to advance and continue IBM’s American manufacturing of mainframe and quantum computers.”

"Technology doesn’t just build the future — it defines it," IBM Chairman, President and CEO Arvind Krishna said. "We have been focused on American jobs and manufacturing since our founding 114 years ago, and with this investment and manufacturing commitment we are ensuring that IBM remains the epicenter of the world’s most advanced computing and AI capabilities."

The company is a leader in hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence, marking a major win for American tech. It comes on the heels of major investments by companies like vehicle manufacturer Hyundai and shipping giant CMA CGM.
