Real ID deadline not a deadline, just enforcement, Oregon DMV says; but could cause delays with TSA
2 min read
"I don’t actually like to call it a deadline. It’s an enforcement date. So if you’re not going to be on a plane anytime soon, you don’t need a REAL ID," said Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Chris Crabb.
Crabb says you’ll be able to get a REAL ID after the May7 deadline, or enforcement date, and, in fact, you don’t have to get one at all if you don’t plan on flying, visiting a federal building or a military installation.
But to get through any Transportation Security Administration checkpoint you will need a REAL ID.
TSA says, for now, it will work with people who don’t have the REAL ID, but it could delay boarding a plane with extra screening, and flyers risk missing their flights.
People can also get through TSA with a passport or a military ID or a tribal ID.
