Free preschool program in Oregon doesn’t come without challenges
2 min read
Multnomah County’s taxpayer-funded, free preschool program is on track to offer free preschool to every family that wants it by 2030. However, KATU found that some providers believe the county is slow to address some of the program’s growing pains.
Almost 4,000 children will take advantage of free preschool next year in Multnomah County at roughly 220 locations compared to about 700 in the program’s first year in 2022. The program’s costs are covered by a tax on individuals who make more than $125,000 and couples who make more than $200,000.
The county recently highlighted the growth and called it a “remarkable milestone.” However, that growth doesn’t come without challenges, according to provider Angie Garcia.
