Businesses get help to bolster security amid rise in thefts with grants

Retail theft crimes have been on the rise in Washington County for the third consecutive year. To help reverse the trend, local businesses are getting help from the county.
With funding from the state legislature, the Washington County District Attorney’s Office established a program for small and medium-sized local businesses to help bolster security measures.
The numbers paint a clear picture. According to data gathered by the district attorney’s office, Washington County saw more theft cases during the first four months of the year for the third consecutive year since 2023. Now, the focus turns to tackling the issue, in part, by providing financial assistance to establishments for security improvements.
The mini-grant program is twofold. Barton says the program is also backing overtime for police officers throughout the county to conduct missions at stores to catch people in the act of stealing.
Small and medium-sized businesses are the only establishments that can apply. About 40 businesses have applied so far.
