Despite tax approval, this Oregon county faces a significant budget shortfall
1 min read
Multnomah County is grappling with a significant budget shortfall, which could have widespread impacts on local services and jobs.
In an exclusive interview on KATU’s Your Voice, Your Vote, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson discussed her proposed $4 billion budget and the challenges the county faces.
Vega Pederson explained the origins of the budget deficit, despite the approval of a tax in 2020 aimed at addressing homelessness.
The tax, which is paid by high-income earners in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties, was expected to alleviate financial pressures.
"The budget shortfall is a complex issue," said Vega Pederson. "We are working diligently to address it while maintaining essential services for our community."
