Clearing of Sandy River Delta camps begins as part of restoration efforts

The Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) has begun clearing out homeless encampments inside the Sandy River Delta, also known as “Thousand Acres.”
DSL temporarily closed about 50 acres of state-owned land near Troutdale on May 12 in order to begin restoration work. The encampments are being cleared as part of these restoration efforts, DSL said, due to their “unsafe conditions for visitors and those living at the site.”
KATU previously visited the area in 2022 alongside the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach and Programs Engagement team (HOPE). At that time between 25 and 30 people were living there.
In a recent update, DSL estimated there were between 30-40 people living in the camps. The department says they have been working with Multnomah County’s Homeless Services Department and its partner outreach teams to advise residents about the deadline to move out and to help provide them with resources.
